If you are a person who desires a culturally authentic experience that is reflective of the local people, and shares their history and ancient legends in a way that resonates with you, by being hands on and actively involved, yet at one with the river.
Then join us and our guides for a tour that is led from the heart and let the pounamu call to you as a gift from the river.
Our tours cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world, as the connection to the river and local people is interwined in history and holds true to the values of Kati Waewae tribe, guardians of the Arahura river.
The last private river on earth.

Our philosophy when creating jewellery with the natural gold is to leave the nuggets in their original state, preserving the unique raw forms from the ground. Ask to hold one of the large real gold nuggets in your hand and feel the amazing weight of gold, or why not purchase your own gold pan and try your luck!

Bonz n Stonz provides a traditional jade, cone or shell carving experience.
Design and carve your own piece or shop online.
Founded in 2000 by master carver Steve Gwaliasi, Bonz and Stonz is a place where the ancient traditions of pounamu (New Zealand greenstone), bone, and shell carving are brought to life.
Hailing from the Solomon Islands, Steve’s journey into whakairo began in 1988 while working on a gold claim. As he unearthed pounamu boulders from the whenua, he felt the deep wairua (spirit) of the stone calling him to a new path—one of creation, storytelling, and cultural connection.
Whether you are a traveler seeking a hands-on experience, an artist drawn to the craft, or someone wishing to shape a personal taonga (treasure), Bonz and Stonz is a space to carve, create, and connect to the land, the ocean, and the traditions that bind us across the Pacific.

We like to say, “Nou gaan ons braai!”—which simply means, “Now we’re going to have a barbecue!” But to us, it’s so much more than that. It’s a declaration of joy, a promise of good times, and a symbol of our positive and welcoming culture.
That spirit of togetherness is what we hope to bring into our shop. We want it to be more than just a place to buy food—we want it to feel like a place where people come to connect, learn, and celebrate.
South Africa is often called the Rainbow Nation—a country of diverse cultures, traditions, and languages. This diversity is beautifully reflected in our cuisine. Whether it’s the bold spices of Cape Malay cooking, the comfort of Afrikaner classics, or the unique snacks that you can’t find anywhere else in the world, South African food is a true celebration of who we are.
In our shop, you’ll find all of these influences come together. We offer beloved cultural staples like vetkoek (our famous fried bread), boerewors (traditional sausage made with a family recipe), and specialties like biltong and droewors, which are cherished by South Africans everywhere. We also import groceries and snacks made only in South Africa—because sometimes, the taste of home is the best comfort there.
We are Hokitika's South African Grocery Store, Cafe and Takeaways and we have great coffee!!!
