Cool Ideas | Go fish

Grab your rods and head to the rivers, lakes and sea to see what you can catch!

  • Freshwater fishing - You can fish for perch and brown trout at Lake Mahinapua from a boat and Lake Kaniere offers some salmon, perch, rainbow and brown trout. The Hokitika River or Mahinapua Creek offer sea-run and river trout all year round and from January to April salmon.
  • Surfcasting - At the Hokitika river mouth pull in rig (pioke), kahawai or elephant fish (makarepe). Snapper can be caught from the Hokitika beach.
  • Whitebaiting - In September and November, hundreds pour into the area in search of “white gold” - whitebait.
