SUMMARY:Skin & Bone at the Old Lodge Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Old Lodge Theatre\, July 14\, 7pmTickets available from humanitixSkin & Bone: A Blend of Old and New in Dunedin’s Music SceneAlbum available now: Last Bus to BrockvilleSkin & Bone are a five piece acoustic swing band from Ōtepoti\, Dunedin. Formed relatively recently\,they are nevertherless a product of some very longstanding musical friendships. Difficult to pigeonhole\, a substantial portion of their repertoire is 1930’s style swing\, and they are popular in theirhometown as an energetic dance band who will always pack the dance floor. In addition\, they have asizeable number of original tunes\, that tend toward acoustic rock\, and contemporary folk musicfrom Aotearoa. The band has recently released their first album ‘Last Bus to Brockville’ featuring acollection of these original tunes together with a sampling of that old style swing. The band alsopride themselves on close harmony vocals from three lead singers.Skin & Bone areEmily Sterk – clarinetAnna Bowen – fiddle\, mandolin and voiceMike Moroney – guitar and voiceJohn Dodd – bass and voiceSteve (Huddy) Hudson – drums and voiceMike and John had performed together for over 30 years in the iconic folk band The Chaps\, that undertook 3 tours of Europe\, many tours of NZ\, and released 3 albums before disbanding. Annajoined this group in its latter days\, having already been working in a duo with Mike (Catgut and Steel) for many years. When Catgut and Steel started to develop their repertoire toward a swing soundthey pulled John back into their mix\, and he brought with him his favourite drummer Huddy from his rock’n’roll band the Whirling Eddys (another band of longetivity\, having entertained Dunedinaudiences since the mid nineties). Huddy has an innate grasp of feel and with Moroney’s so solid guitar chunk and the walking bass lines\, this band truly swings. Anna is a gifted fiddler and alsocrucial to the band’s groove\, and to complement this they wished for another solo instrument\, clarinet specifically\, and discovered the wonderful Emily hiding out in the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra. The clarinet/fiddle mix makes our sound distinctive\, and when Anna moves over to the mandolin it only makes the rhythm more driving. With their infectious energy\, impressive musical pedigree\, and captivating blend of styles\, Skin & Bone is a band you won’t want to miss.If you wish to read further\, here’s a short profile of each musician.Arriving in Dunedin around the turn of the century\, Anna immediately came to the attention of a wide range of local musicians through her inventive busking (with fiddle and puppets). While playing in a range of folk-oriented bands she managed to study and attain a teaching degree\, at the same time learning mandolin and raising three young children. Not having enough to occupy her\, she joined the Pioneer Pog ‘n’ Scroggin Bush Band (where she played with both John and Mike)\, which eventually folded and gave way to the duo Catgut & Steel\, which still endures as the ceilidh band of choice around Otago and Southland.Emily has always admired ‘real musicians who can make stuff up’ but has spent most of her life playing notes someone else wrote. After completing a Bachelor of Music with Honours and a Master of Music in clarinet performance\, she joined the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra as a clarinettist and also began teaching at the University of Otago and Logan Park High School. Now\, more than 20 years later\, Emily is still passionate about performing with the orchestra and teaching\, but she has also finally found the courage to join some ‘real musicians’ as well.Huddy joined The Kal-Q-Lated Risk in the early 70s\, appearing on their first album. He and his bass playing brother Chris joined the westward drift to Australia in the mid 70’s\, where they eventually became a rhythm section for hire\, working with such Aussie legends as Stevie Wright\, Glenn Shorrock and many others. He was a part of the 80s/90s rockabilly/western swing trend\, touring with the Flying Emus and supporting Dale Watson. He and Chris were rhythm section for rock’n’roll showband the Comets\, dance crowd legends and backing band to the Stars of Yesteryear. Returning to Aotearoa in the early 2000’s\, he was nabbed by the Oxo Cubans\, tapped on the shoulder by the Whirling Eddys\, subsequently recording and gigging with a wide range of Dunedin musicians. He has a cowbell and he is not afraid to use it Veteran folk musician and occasional rocker\, playing solo and in a duo with Anna (Catgut & Steel)\, in addition to a number of memorable units including the Pioneer Pog ‘n’ Scroggin Bush Band and The Chaps. He has been a sound engineer for most of that time (over 40 years) too. Mike plays all manner of guitars and guitar styles as well as mandolin\, banjo\, and is a keen session fiddler. He is a founding member of the Dunedin Scottish Fiddle Orchestra. He was recently given the title of Musical Director of the Dunedin Burns Club and is still trying to figure out what this means. When his daughter joined the swing dance movement\, he was obliged to steer his repertoire in that direction.John is best known as a bass player and vocalist frequently performing in any one of several groups in and around Dunedin. This has included the Chaps\, the Whirling Eddys\, Delgirl\, the Oxo Cubans\, the Spaghettis\, The Ratz\, the Pog Band\, as a soloist and in a duo with John Egenes. He toured USA with the Donna Dean Band and spent much time playing with Midge Marsden’s touring group in the 1980’s. He has recently retired from a long held post as HOD of Music at Logan Park High School. He has worked as a session musician on many albums\, and has been in the band of the MLT Songwriting Awards/Tui Country Music awards\, since the inception of the event.

SUMMARY:Bruce Mason’s The End of the Golden Weather
DESCRIPTION:Kiwi theatre classic for The Old LodgeContinuing its agenda of mounting a classic play in the Blackball Bathhouse each summer\, Kiwi/Possum Productions presented a NZ classic at the end of January: Bruce Mason’s The End of the Golden Weather and have found a weekend among other commitments to bring it to The Old Lodge Theatre in Hokitika. The End of the Golden Weather was first performed in 1960 and subsequently Mason performed it in almost every village\, town and city in New Zealand\, clocking up over 500 performances\, including taking it to The Edinburgh Festival. He was determined to make a living as an actor\, something previously unheard of in New Zealand.Set in the beachside suburb of Takapuna (called Te Parenga in the play)\, it is a coming of age story of how an imaginative child loses his innocence as he encounters the adult world and a friendship with a schizophrenic local with whom he has empathy turns sour. It is the 1930s and everyone will recognise the summer beach atmosphere and the boozy relatives\, the charades\, the attempted concert\, visits to church and boyish quarrels. In 1991 the story was made into a popular NZ movie.‘In this production\,’ states director Paul Maunder\, ‘three local actors\, Frank Wells\, Francis Darwin and myself\, share the story telling. With these elders dressed in boyish shorts\, the production takes on a surreal quality and could almost be set in a rest home. Pam McKelvey has designed the set\, transforming the theatre into a beach\, Elisa Wells is once again costumer and Karen Grant provides the music.End of the Golden Weather will play at The Old Lodge at 7.30pm\, Saturday June 15th. Admission will be $20\, $15 for school students. The production was supported by Creative Communities and bookings can be made by texting your name and number of seats required to 0211063669

The aircraft had flown the first flights on the West Coast as a key feature of the British and Intercolonial Exhibition\, a small world’s fair\, held at Hokitika between 15 December 1923 and 2 February 1924. Buckley and Harrington flew off West Coast beaches for several months doing joy-riding with more than 500 passengers and as far north as Westport and Karamea. A highlight flight was on 22 January 1924 when the Blazing Arrow flew the first flight to South Westland and return. When the joy-riding was all over\, Captain Buckley (a WWI trained pilot)\, with Harrington\, after a delay due to the weather\, left Greymouth at 2.20pm on 4 June 1924 and flew to the Sockburn Airfield at Christchurch in a flight time of about one hour and 30 minutes. A height of about 8\,000ft was reached by the Avro. The first-trans-alpine flight was a start to the revolution of air travel to come – and which continues as an essential aspect of domestic air travel to and from the West Coast to this very day. \nOn Tuesday 4th June 2024 – the 100th anniversary of the first trans-alpine flight -passengers on all Air New Zealand scheduled flights will be informed of the milestone day\, along with some festivities at the Hokitika Airport Terminal. Local aero clubs are planning special flights (weather dependent)\, and newspaper feature articles on both sides of the alps will pay tribute to the aviation pioneers and celebrate the trans-alpine air route – surely one of the most scenic in the world.

SUMMARY:Hokitika Wildfoods Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:Hokitika Wildfoods Festival – Saturday 9th March 2024 \nHokitika’s annual Wildfoods Festival is a celebration of the West Coast’s unique wild food and lifestyle\, accompanied by premier entertainment. Visitors can sample a wide array of local natural foods\, ranging from some of the weirdest and most exotic delicacies to fabulous gourmet specialties. What’s traditionally found in the heart of the bush and deep in the ocean is served up with a fork for the daring. Apart from hunting the mountains for pigs\, deer\, thar and chamois and fishing the sea\, keen stallholders have not left many stones unturned in their efforts to explore edible possibilities. Even garden weeds have been discovered as herbs useful in festival salads and beverages. \nThe festival first came into fruition in 1990 when Hokitika local\, Claire Bryant\, instigated the very first celebration of local wild foods. Her wine cellar was very well stocked with a home brew of West Coast gorse flower wine and people were clamouring for a taste of her rose petal brew. The first event also coincided with the 125th anniversary celebration of the birth of Hokitika in March 1990. Locals and the rest of New Zealand were captured by the magic of the idea – a celebration of Hokitika and the wild foods of the West Coast. \nOffering tunes for all tastes\, entertainment is comprised of a top line-up of New Zealand musicians playing the main stage. \nThose with a creative flair can enter Feral Fashion – a wearable arts style competition modelled on the racing circuits Fashion in the Field. Contestants get creative\, forage in their surroundings\, and create a wild alter ego to wear to the festival. \nIf children are not interested in sampling huhu grubs\, the Kids Corner will keep them occupied with face painting\, a massive inflatable pirate ship\, a candy shop and more. \nPerforming in 2024 \nJon Toogood \nHarmonic Resonators \nTickets on sale NOW
