SUMMARY:Hokitika Wildfoods Festival - 14th March 2026
DESCRIPTION:Hokitika’s Wildfoods Festival is a celebration of the West Coast’s unique wild food and lifestyle\, with premiere entertainment \nHokitika’s annual Wildfoods Festival is a celebration of the West Coast’s unique wild food and lifestyle\, accompanied by premier entertainment. Visitors can sample a wide array of local natural foods\, ranging from some of the weirdest and most exotic delicacies to fabulous gourmet specialties. What’s traditionally found in the heart of the bush and deep in the ocean is served up with a fork for the daring. Apart from hunting the mountains for pigs\, deer\, thar and chamois and fishing the sea\, keen stallholders have not left many stones unturned in their efforts to explore edible possibilities. Even garden weeds have been discovered as herbs useful in festival salads and beverages. \nThe festival first came into fruition in 1990 when Hokitika local\, Claire Bryant\, instigated the very first celebration of local wild foods. Her wine cellar was very well stocked with a home brew of West Coast gorse flower wine and people were clamouring for a taste of her rose petal brew. The first event also coincided with the 125th anniversary celebration of the birth of Hokitika in March 1990. Locals and the rest of New Zealand were captured by the magic of the idea – a celebration of Hokitika and the wild foods of the West Coast. \nOffering tunes for all tastes\, entertainment is comprised of a top line-up of New Zealand musicians playing the main stage. \nThose with a creative flair can enter Feral Fashion – a wearable arts style competition modelled on the racing circuits Fashion in the Field. Contestants get creative\, forage in their surroundings\, and create a wild alter ego to wear to the festival. \nIf children are not interested in sampling huhu grubs\, the Kids Corner will keep them occupied with face painting\, a massive inflatable pirate ship\, a candy shop and more. \nA TASTE OF THE WILD

One of the most well known and diverse artists and producers in Aotearoa NZ\, Tiki Taane is considered to be an influential element in the pioneering of Aotearoa’s bass culture\, as well as the country’s most prolific genre bending experimentalist. First hitting the scene in 1991\, Tiki rose to prominence as the sound engineer and front man for Salmonella Dub\, joining them in 1996 til 2007. In 2008 Tiki released his double platinum selling\, self produced solo album “Past Present Future” featuring the beautiful acoustic ballard “Always On My Mind” which rose to #1 and broke two all time records – it sat in the Official NZ charts for a record 55 weeks and was also the first ever NZ digital single to acheive platinum sales. DJ Axis is no stranger when it comes to being the support act for her husband Tiki Taane. The two have been an unstoppable duo\, throwing down high energy sets here and abroad with charismatic synergy. DJ Axis will be opening things up at the Theatre with her tasty selection of Amapiano\, House and Techno\, and then closing off the stage with her favourite style to DJ – Drum & Bass. SUMMARY:Planting Day - Wadeson Island
DESCRIPTION:Final Big Planting Day – Wadeson Island\nSun 22 Feb\, 10am–1pm • Hokitika Rugby League Club gate\nBBQ on. Tools ready. Hundreds of plants ready to go in the ground. \nPlease note we are meeting at the gate\, and that we can now confirm: The gate will be open so we can use the usual parking.\nThis isn’t a regular working bee — it’s a community planting with a sausage sizzle. It’s the last one promised for the series\, so it would be great to see you there. Show up\, smile\, plonk in some seedlings; we’ll handle the gnarly stuff. \n\n10:00–10:30 arrivals\, induction\, safety\, kōrero\n10:30–11:45 planting (easy tasks for all ages)\n12:00–13:00 BBQ / social (optional linger)\n\nProgramme is a rough guide — times and activities may stretch or swap around depending on numbers and pace. Extra plants and team leaders will be on hand\, and early birds (from 9am) can help set up. \nYou bring: sturdy shoes\, warm layer\, sunhat\, a friend.\nWe provide: plants\, tools & gloves\, hi‑vis\, water\, sunblock\, sausage sizzle. \nOn arrival\, please sign in at the registration clipboard and select an appropriately sized pair of gloves and hi-vis. Our project deliverables require us to plant 500 native rākau. So far we’ve planted 896\, and we’re going to crack 1000 at this next event\, so ka pai and kā mihi everyone! This is one you really want to be part of! The terrain close to the gate is very dry and quite varied (lots of flat space)\, so as usual you won’t benefit from gumboots. \nRSVP (encouraged): wadeson@chris-nz.com (helps with catering).\nPostponement: announced by 9am via email (+ Coast FM)\, with a website infobox update. \nDelivered as part of the Air New Zealand Every Corner Project\, with in-kind and practical support from a range of local councils\, businesses\, iwi\, conservation organisations and volunteers.

SUMMARY:SHADES OF SHAKTI
DESCRIPTION:Shades of Shakti are an intercultural group of musicians bridging the gap between traditional Indian music\, classical music and Jazz. Their performance mesmerises audiences through the intricacy of the musical interplay\, the propulsive energy of their melodies\, the excitement of their rhythms\, and the overall interconnectedness of all the performers on stage. Since debuting at the Wellington Jazz Festival in 2018\, Shades of Shakti have captivated audiences across New Zealand\, including standing ovations at the New Zealand Festival of the Arts\, Hawkes Bay Arts Festival\, and shows across the country. \nThe collaboration seeks to bring communities together and celebrate human diversity through music\, their concerts present an impressive repertoire of original compositions\, traditional Indian Ragas\, and music from Ravi Shankar’s legendary “East Meets West” album\, and also quintessential works from John McLaughlin’s Grammy Award-winning “Shakti”\, from which the group drew initial inspiration.
