Go fish! There are plenty of options for fishing around Hokitika and it offers some of the best fishing on the West Coast. 

  • Freshwater fishing - Lake Mahinapua from a boat for perch and brown trout. Lake Kaniere some salmon, perch, rainbow and brown trout. The Hokitika River or Mahinapua Creek offer sea-run and river trout all year round and from January to April salmon.
  • Surfcasting - At the Hokitika river mouth pull in rig (pioke), kahawai or elephant fish (makarepe). Snapper can be caught from the Hokitika beach.
  • Whitebaiting - In September and November, hundreds pour into the area in search of “white gold” - whitebait.
