See & Do

Go fish! There are plenty of options for fishing around Hokitika and it offers some of the best fishing on the West Coast.

Freshwater Fishing

With two lakes to choose from, Hokitika offers a range of lake fishing opportunities.

  • Lake Mahinapua fishing is best done from a boat, with perch and brown trout plentiful.
  • At Lake Kaniere cast your rod out for some salmon, perch, rainbow and brown trout.
  • Or try your hand at fishing the Hokitika River or Mahinapua Creek. You can spin and fly fish for sea-run and river trout all year round and from January to April you may even catch a salmon.

Surfcasters at the Hokitika river mouth often pull in rig (pioke), kahawai or elephant fish (makarepe). Snapper can even be caught from the Hokitika beach.

For ten weeks every year in September and November, the quiet tranquility of the rivers is replaced by a buzz of excitement as hundreds pour into the area in search of “white gold”. Hokitika’s rivers teem with those seeking whitebait.

  • Have a go at catching some yourself.
  • Watch whitebaiters at the river mouth scooping for the little fish
  • Try some at the local cafes and restaurants

For Beginners

It is no wonder fishermen and women come back to try their luck year after year however if you want to teach the children the basics then take them to Kawhaka Dam, it is perfect for beginners.
