Kumara

28kms north of Hokitika, Kumara is a former gold mining town that has enjoyed a recent revitalisation. The local community has spent much time and effort in creating historic attractions which bring the rich history of the area to life for visitors.

Kumara Activities 

  • Kumara is a major stopping point along the scenic West Coast Wilderness Trail. Kumara is a great place to enter the trail if doing shorter day cycles or signals the end of the first day's cycling if doing the full 132km from Greymouth to Ross. 
  • Kumara hosts some of the West Coast's largest events. Kumara provides a base for competitors and their support teams heading off on the annual Coast to Coast endurance race and the annual Kumara Horse Race Meeting brings thousands of visitors each year. 
  • There is lots to do in Kumara for the outdoor enthusiast from great short walks that feature historic relics, hunting and fishing to fossicking for gold.
  • It is only an hour from three skifields in the Arthur's Pass National Park.

Kumara Races

A good old-fashioned country horse race meeting. The main race, the Kumara Gold Nuggets boasts a real gold nugget as the prize. This is a fantastic family day out and draws a huge crowd to soak up the entertainment and carnival atmosphere. There is something for everyone – betting booths, fantastic races, best dressed competitions, live music, candyfloss and even clowns. 

SUMMER FESTIVAL EVENT: Speight's Coast to Coast Multisport Race

Date : 9 and 10 Feb 2018
LOCATION : Kumara

The Speight's Coast to Coast is a multi-sport event that has been held for over 30 years. It traverses the South Island of New Zealand from Serpentine Beach on the Tasman Sea to Brighton Beach on the Pacific Ocean. Over either one or two days competitors cycle, run and kayak through some of New Zealand's most beautiful terrain. www.coasttocoast.co.nz

Access: Turn off SH73, 1 km east of Kumara onto a metalled road running alongside a water race
Features: Walk passes through stone-fields of old goldmining tailings & manuka forest to huge glacier-deposited boulder, too big for the early miners to move or break.
